Air Quality Alert 2/18/26

February 18, 2026News and Updates
Please be advised that the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) has forecasted today’s Air Quality Index (AQI) in the NYC metropolitan area to reach approximately 105, primarily due to elevated levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5).

An AQI between 101–150 is categorized as “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.” At this level, members of sensitive groups may experience health effects, while the general public is less likely to be affected.

Sensitive groups include children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and persons with heart or lung disease. Individuals who work outdoors are also considered part of a sensitive group during air quality events.

PM2.5 consists of very small airborne particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs and may aggravate respiratory and cardiovascular conditions, particularly during prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity.

Recommended Actions for Outdoor Work

Consistent with guidance from NYS DEC, EPA, OSHA, and NIOSH, the following best management practices are recommended:

·    Reduce strenuous outdoor work: Limit prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors where feasible.

·    Increase rest breaks: Schedule additional breaks in cleaner indoor or enclosed environments.

·    Monitor vulnerable employees: Workers with asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions should watch for symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, or chest discomfort.

·    Adjust work schedules when possible: Shift non-critical outdoor tasks to times or days with improved air quality.

These measures align with the OSHA General Duty Clause, which requires employers to maintain a workplace free from recognized hazards, including harmful air contaminants.
